g4 powerbook upgrade question

Morning! Does anyone know the answer to this question.
I have been looking around for a new MacBook Pro - but due to cost from the suppliers/authorised dealers and also the shady b*stards that scout around ebay etc... I have begun wondering about a different approach.
I have a first generation 17" powerbook (1ghz) - the keyboard is balding and top case is erroded from my sweaty wrist resting on it - but I know that can be sorted easily enough.
What I am unsure of is what would be the maximum upgrade I can give the internals - hard drive etc... What would be the highest spec I could put into one of these? Can it go as far as having a macbook pro spec? or would it just go as far as the last G4 Powerbook?
Anyone know about these things? What is the best I can hope for?
Thanks in anticipation
;-)

Don't bother, it's a dinosaur even after an upgrade.
http://www.daystartechnology.com…Spend it on a new or refurbished Macbook Pro instead, it's much better investment in the long run.

What about sparking out some cash on a refurb? They are cheaper than a brand spankin new one with none of the hassle of finding a reputable seller on ebay.

...yeh, refurb is deffo in the equation - but then I think for a few quid more I can get a brand spanking new one - but then I think for a few quid less I can get a refurb - but then I think for a few quid more.. err, well you get the idea?

Maybe a bigger harddisk and the maximum of ram would be a slight performance improvement but it isn't that fast as a macbook pro.

yeh - I guess there is no easy way around it - you get what you pay for I guess
