I plan to put the entire collection of photos on a network drive and would like to be able to access it from two computers (not necessarily at once).
As far as I can see, neither Aperture nor Lightroom are designed to handle network sharing. Is there a good way to go about it using either of these apps?

Not that I've found, I use lightroom and it's just not setup for a catalog on a network share.

I know that it cannot have the database on a shared drive, but can it at least have the physical photos there?

I have used both, and I'm using Aperture right now.

Have you tried setting Aperture to leave the masters where they be, and just create references in the library?

I don't see why you couldn't do this with either. You just have to set your preferences so you organize your photos instead of letting the software move things around.
I decided to use a Bridge & Photoshop together, because I prefer to organize things myself.

Having Bridge, I thought there was no need for such thing as Lightroom. I was wrong, it makes a world of difference in my workflow. Plus, Bridge is dog slow, even takes long time to start, while Lightroom is amazingly fast. Lightroom also gives me more control over certain image properties than Photoshop does. I like that it gives you the same controls for all files Photoshop has for importing RAW only.
I will probably settle on storing files on the network and having separate libraries on both computers.

I got a drobo to replace my NAS for this very reason. Now I just let Aperture manage my library locally, and store the vaults on the Drobo.

You mean, the images are on the drobo and the library files managing them are stored on each machine separately?

Seems like I can't have lightroom catalogs on network drives, but what about USB drives?
