"Graphic artist" is a broad term that includes illustrators, graphic designers, painters, etc. Basically anyone involved in the creation or visuals.
On the other hand, HR managers, Marketing Directors, etc are all parts of the "Douche Bag" category.

Designers design. Artists dont design most of the time, but I guess both can do both but I would imagine a 'graphic designer' designs more than he does art. Like an interface needs to be designed, for example... or a branding project.

From Highest to lowest paid:
Creative Director
Design Director
Art Director
DesignerGraphic Artist sounds more like an illustrator, but if that was the kind of work I wanted, I'd just call myself an illustrator.
- I'm actually kinda bummed that "Graphic Designer" really means "low level photoshop guy" to most HR peoplerocknonstop

if you're doing any type of web work i would put interactive designer - in my experience 'they' get paid more than someone with a graphic designer title.

Graphic Designer and Graphic Artist seem to be distinctly different people to me.
Graphic Designer = all things but with emphasis on the laying out of information, correct typesetting, information heirarchy.
Graphic Artist = all things but emphasis on expressive visual motifs. A hybrid illustrator/visualiser. Image and Iconography used to express meaning.
Gilbert Lesser was a graphic artist, Wim Crouwel was a graphic designer. Thats how I see it.

my spin: (althoughI agree with what spookytime says above):
I think the term graphic artist is very outdated and dates back to people like abram games or mcknight Kauffer:
http://images.google.co.uk/imageā¦I don't think there is a modern day equivilent in the design world because now all the jobs are split up, but it used to be that a graphic artist would do the concept and the final drawing/painting including typography (often hand drawn).
The only thing I can think of that compares now is a graphic novelist.I suppose now an artworker would be a close term, or 'creative artworker'
A graphic designer should be an equivilent except most don't draw or paint or airbrush anymore.
- i think this is the difference between a good designer and a bad oneESPtype

i'm an artist... i make money being a graphic deigner

Graphic Artist was our title during the 20th Century. By 2000, it was officially Graphic Designer. Kind of like how a sales clerk used to be known as a haberdasher.

artistic graphic designer?
- dskz0
Graphic Designer specializing in Interactive Design and Animation for the common good of all aesthetics.

i always felt an artist is a designer but a designer is not necessarily an artist. there is no problem to either position, a graphic designer lays out clip art and type where the graphic artist creates the fonts and custom artwork and also has the know-how to lay it out in a functional form.

I'm just a hack so I really don't give a crap. On the other hand, where does the title "Pixel-Pushing Monkey" fall within the industry?
