I have t side with Matt... I'm drowning in work right now with 2 guys on staff. I turn down projects daily. So the question is are you charging to much, being to picky, niching yourself to much or what? If you do interactive and/or Flash I can feed you sub $4k work. You have some decent stuff.... either you don't network well enough or something else isn't going right. Talk to me... seriously.

No work? you have to be joking (and i do not mean that to be rude at all.) I have more work than i have in 10 years. Seriously- i get projects i refuse every week, usually more than one. I think i have 23 projects right now.
What sort of work do you do/want to do?

Basically print & identity work are what I am best at. I can work front-end interactive and basic web (HTML & CSS).
- madirish0
i bet that is why then. :(
there is SO much damn web/interactive work right now it is insane. best of luck dude! (been there before)

Yeah, that's why you're busy and I'm not. Been on the phone all day and I may have one or two leads; but things would be alright if I hadn't had two or three projects just slip away from me, with only some potential of reappearing...

skwiotsmith,
i have been there before- BIG time. Never easy and it can be rough seeing through the down times. The thing that I always felt though, was the ideal i wanted to craft, and conjuring ways I could get others on board to achieve that. As if i was my own religion i guess. LOL.
To put it to an example; in one week after about 3 months of super-rough times, i:
- won a $30k project
- lost a $2k project
- declined a $10k project (due to timing)
- had the $30k project recinded by the issuer as the contract (Fed level) was repealed overall
- worked like hell to get a part of the $10k back (from person they awarded it to
- got lucky and the $2k one came back my way

Seems like it must be harder to find print/ ID work in general...I'm with madirish, been completely slammed for the past few months. I haven't actually looked for a job since 2007, and have had my hands full with repeat work from existing clients ever since then.

Well, in the Twin Cities print designers are just everywhere, but interactive is a whole different ball game. Like I said, I've been on the phone all day, and I might have one project coming out of it, but I might be trying to hook up with a programmer and trying the interactive thing, just to get business going.
But I appreciate the words/support. Here's to some hopeful work.
- I pretty much hate web design, what little of it I doDr_Rand

I've never understood how print guys make a living freelancing. Seems like a hard sell with more folks than work. The reality is more and more money is flowing towards the web. A trend that will not let up anytime soon.
- I 2nd that. How do you make a living designing logos and brochures? Seriously...mrbee2828
