got any important files on your hard drive or do you use an external?
when all else fails for me (which is rare on macs for me) i just re-do my system, luckily everything important is stored on externals (extremely paranoid with my data)

restart and hold Apple-S. When the Unix screen prompts you, type:
fsck -fy
It'll take a couple minutes. If it says SYSTEM MODIFIED, run it again, until SYSTEM OK comes up. Type REBOOT to restart.
If this gets you back up, repair permissions from Disk Utility
Good luck!

New iMac - installed the new OS update. When the computer restarted the dock for the date, time, spotlight, airport icon that is always up top has disappeared. It shows up if I click on system prefs what gives?
