opacity mask with effects

  Hi all,

  I have a box with a drop shadow, I am trying to hvae the box fade from top to bottom into transparency. In illustrator, when I add an opacity mask to an object with an effect, I lose the effect on the box below, is there any way to maintain appearance on the original object?
