Im getting signed to a record label and I want to know how much percentage of record sales would be a fair-market value to ask for?
I will check AIGA and other resources but you guys are the best* and I wanted to run it though you all.
Have a good Tuesday.

i ussually get a per-job rate. Are they hiring you full time? Normally recorda labels Don't pay per unit sold for the designers

Indie label. They want me to art direct the label. They will use my interdisciplinary skills to help market them.

I didn't know graphic artists got signed by record labels... maybe you'll make more than the musicians!? Payments for album art vary... you'd be very lucky if you can negotiate a percentage of the record sales, I would say...I wonder if someone asked Saggmeister this question on his site?

This is interesting... what's the label? I'd like to see what you end up creating for them...

i would get a monthly contract - just guessing at 2k or so per month (this depends on how many packaging jobs you will be doing per month) I would write up a contract, get them to look it over and pay you monthly. This way you are set and don't need to wait for them to sell albums to get paid. If they operate through cash flow (lots of indie labels do) get at least 1k per packaging design. Last resort is for them to pay you after the cds are printed. They could burn you dude.

Getting burned in the music industry? Nahhhhh*

My opinion on this. Is do one at a time 50% upfront 50% upon completion If it works out after 2 then listen to the package deal first off prove your worth. then negotiate.
- worth proven. Now they want to sign me and pay me...********
- cool...what have you done already? Can we has sample?marychain

it's all about finding out if you want to work with their people. What if you dont want to work for client A after the first month. it's not like your a full time employee you know? I think it's worth testing the waters and taking a bit more from it. record covers will never pay much. But record websites will. So you should get compensated will if you end up doing identities for bands that get used on multiple places. This shit can get really tricky. they use that stuff for myspace ads etc. on top of it. And you need to be able to well... make a living. so.. think about it.

Does the cost of the album design/branding/web design come out of the artist's advance? Or is that a service that the record label pays for? Reason is, if the money is coming out of the artist's advance, the artist(s) can control how much they want to spend on design, and cap it at specific amounts (for example, no more than 1k on album design and so forth), right?

They want music videos and album covers from me. I will ask about the web stuff but it does make sense to venture into that as well because I do that too. They want me to keep a tight and cohesive brand.
