just got told off for using a few soft returns..
whats everyone's must have rules?
- elaltito0
hmmmm soft returns can be dangerous, if you end having to edit the copy and any point, and it all reflows.... fucking nightmare to go and fix em all...
but personally i still think its worth it in the end to have the copy looking 1% better, for the price of that (potential) extra time...

well thats what i thought, is there an alternative?
- ocd0
You can set the text to do it automatically using the 'Balance Ragged Lines' setting in InDesign CS3 (not sure if this option was available in previous versions of InDesign)
It is located at the very top right of the InDesign CS3 horizontal toolbar if you are looking for it... only thing is it makes the decisions of where to insert its invisible soft returns as opposed to you...
Good luck!

So hang on.
How do you control your line endings, orphans and widows then? if you cannot use soft returns?
- doesnotexist0
put spaces in until it goes over to the next line?
- perfect thanksDancer
- But then you have the same re-flow issue mentioned earlierGlitterati_Duane

Soft returns are essential as Dancer says there is no other way of adjusting text for line endings, orphans and widows. Is there?
- Dancer0
auejim, ask your boss how he/she would control their text...
