I highly recommend Puerto Vallarta and Yelepa, Mexico, if you want to go somewhere tropic but don't want to deal with lots of tourists and spring break stupidity. Make sure you stay in the city, not Nuevo Vallarta (that gets a little touristy.)

i say go here instead. the beach all to yourself, ridiculously good food, hardly any tourists, great surf.....
