With all respect I don't think so. early 80s styles look nothing like that. I think the best source is subway art from Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant, 1984.
http://www.scribd.com/doc/97069/…But true there is a trend in graffiti which consists in imitating 70s style. It holds true to many other fields like fashion or even graphics.
The great thing about seeing it today is that it reminds you that those guys back then came up with styles when there was nothing out there. We may see graffiti writers who borrow styles from that period as a 'tribute' to them rather than just copying styles. Because no matter what, we know the sources.

Complete First Season, a film documenting the adventures of an
architect and an engineer who quit their day jobs to develop high-tech tools for the art underground. Featuring insightful and humorous commentary by GRL founders James Powderly and Evan Roth, The Complete First Season argues for free speech in public, open source in pop culture, the hacker spirit in graffiti, and not asking permission in general. The film premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the Graffiti
Research Lab and surprise guests.Stay for the party afterwards, featuring music by Javelin and a final
chance to see MoMA's Design and the Elastic Mind exhibition, which includes the work of the GRL.
