Has anyone else picked up the new M83 album? It is completely ruling my mind right now. By far their best album of any. You won't think that at first and will be like "what's with all the chick vocals and 80s movie soundtrack similarities and super old sounding synths and stuff that generally sounds a bit effeminate?" but then you'll be like "Awesome, this album rules and I can't turn it off."
Just the right mix of their darker/haunting style with, as I mentioned, songs that could have been straight out of an 80s movie. Kim and Jessie is the song I'm talking about, and there are others.
You better got it or get it.

Actually, "the chick vocals and 80s movie soundtrack similarities and super old sounding synths and stuff that generally sounds a bit effeminate" is the stuff I like. Unless the lead singer's voice is very high, which may bother me a bit. Unless he has a good, high voice. I can't remember.

No, this is actually a woman singing on most songs. The second and third songs, Kim and Jessie, and Skin Of The Night could completely be from an 80s movie - and I'm thinking the ones with that whole crew of actors who started out back then, Sixteen Candles, those sorts. (my mind is drawing a blank on other movies.)
There's a particular sound effect in Kim and Jessie that is straight out of 80s music - cant' think of who it would be...
Check out the reviews on Metacritic if you're curious for more info:

I is liking 'We Own The Sky', and 'Graveyard Girl'.

Good album. Was reading from Remix Mag - he uses a shit load of vintage synths on this album.
The one song that bugs me a bit is the one with the girl singing about the rocket.

great album. love the songs "You Appearing," "Couleurs," and "Highway of Endless Dreams" among others. hate that song "Up!"

The singer is from The Romanovs. It's a much better album than Before the Dawn but not as good as the first album! My favorites are all the songs up til We own the Sky. I agree that the 80s refferences are a bit annoying at first. "The Hounds of Love as they bite our heels"... Still pretty good.
- And gutsy imo. Gutsy and slightly obnoxious, just how I like mah records.Redmond

Glad you guys share my enthusiasm! Now here's to hoping they come to Chicago soon.
They were at Lollapalooza a couple years ago I think, I heard they were ridiculous awesome.

In the interest of balance, may I just add in that I think this is their worst album. I don't presume that my negative response will, or should, have any bearing on your own opinion or enjoyment of this record or indeed, the remainder of this thread.
I just felt that I should get it off my chest. I even tried re-listening to this album when mg33 first posted this thread, but to no avail - I still don't like it. It's not got the intensity or the ..verve.. of their previous efforts and the whole retro schtick is done much better elsewhere.
As I say, I'm only posting this for balance. Please, carry on.

If I can make one negative comment, all the songs are rather 2 minutes or even three minutes longer than they should too.

Speaking of their older stuff, the song Don't Save Us From The Flames from Before the Dawn Heals Us is one of my favorite. Listening now, great working music!
