maybe they had a stroke while sitting in front of the computer and no one's due round to see them for a bit, the rent / mortgage is paid months in advance and the next door neighbour figures they're on holiday so is collecting the mail (plus they suffer from anosmia so they can't smell the body as it breaks down).
