Active Collab might be the best one. It isnt exactly free though.
Not sure why you wouldnt consider Basecamp, it has sort of become the defacto standard at ths point.

i always try to use nigty things rather than things that clients actually need.

if you just want to give clients simple access to view images or whatnot in a directory, just use .htaccess and .htpasswd files
