Norman McLaren was an animator from Great Britain who came to Canada in the late 40's and made a bunch of short films for the National Film Board. He used a method of scratching directly into the optical audio track to create the soundtrack for this short.

That's utterly beautiful, Sikma - if a more than a little odd.
Where did you read about the creation of the soundtrack by scratching? It's got an unnervingly electronic sound to it for something created in '53!

i used to be a member of Quick Draw Animation Society in Calgary. while there I met a bunch of people who did "scratch sound" and other weird obscure animation techniques involving manually drawing on film. they had this great animation library with almost all of Norman McLaren's work and a bunch of video interviews were he discussed and explained his processes.
