Source: Variety
April 15, 2008DreamWorks Pictures has acquired rights to the Japanese manga "Ghost in the Shell" with plans to adapt the futuristic police thriller as a 3-D live-action feature, reports Variety.
The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.
Created by Masamune Shirow, "Ghost in the Shell" was first published in 1989. It went on to generate two additional manga editions, three anime film adaptations, an anime TV series and three video games. The second anime film, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, was released in the U.S. by DreamWorks in 2004.
Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment are attached to produce and brought the project to the studio. Jamie Moss has been hired to write the adaptation.
"'Ghost in the Shell' is one of my favorite stories," Spielberg said. "It's a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks."
DreamWorks president of production Adam Goodman said "Ghost in the Shell" is a property "that epitomizes 3-D live-action motion picture possibilities."

"has anyone ever seen a remake that was better than original?"
Agree completely but its even more futile remaking Ghost In The Shell. Its absolutely perfect. Even the dubbing on the English dub is typically bad in a really good way. There's nowehere to improve it. It will be what the film version of AeonFlux was to the original animation.

Not only does remake = suck, 3d = guaranteed ball suckage.
I'm gonna do a quick summary of this remake in the toilet after I eat my lunch.

still waiting for the 6 million dollar man remake.

It will be sugarcoated for sure, a lot less violent, a lot less sexy. But could still be pretty cool looking and action packed.

NOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo...
f*ckin-a! WHY for the asdfasd love of god/God does everything have to be remade (read: RUINED)?????

i prefer the 2 tv series as they had some of the humour of the comic injected back in... the anime are way too serious and i miss shirows sense of fun.

Well, I hope it doesn't end up the head-fuck that was Innocence or the let-down that was Appleseed.
Both TV series were great, managed to download the lot off anime eden.
In the absence of some live William Gibson stuff, it serves its purpose.
Oh and the smiling man logo was designed by a brit too!
