Powerbook & External Monitor Problems

Ok -- a coworker and I both hooked up our laptops today -- as usual -- to external monitors (one Dell , one HP). For whatever reason the monitor did not automatically update to the correct resolution -- as it usually does. Now, neither of us have the option to select the "suggested optimal resolution' in our settings. Anyone else have this problem today?

Can't you change the setting in the system preferences?

We have both tried -- it will work with some of the settings but the display is not ideal. The suggested setting is not available. Its just odd that we both had that happen today.

Do you have mirroring on? Press the key to the right of the 'num lock' key on your PowerBook's keyboard

detect displays?

Mirroring isn't on and I hit detect displays about 15 times.

*Update*
Today all is back to normal. My PB auto-detected the correct screen size for my external monitor and the list of resolution sizes in the display control panel is no longer 50 deep. That was EXTREMELY ODD. Anyone else have this problem?
