I have to ask - anyone have the live 101 album?
Have you listened to it in a while?
I gave it a listen today after we talked about a potential cover song at band practice last night. I was super into them when I was younger and totally loved this album.
But the crowd noise, the absurd crowd noise at certain moments of songs and introductions of new synth tones or vocals is outrageous. Granted it was recorded live at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in the 80s, but whenever I listen to it I'm struck with the thought that people must have not been exposed to a spectacle like that back then and were just out-of-coutrol, freaking out, losing their minds at every (in)significant moment in the songs. That, or the band had crowd noise put way up in the mix for matters of self-glorification. There are moments in songs where I wonder just what's going on because nothing different happens in the music, but the crowd goes insane: Gahan walking across the stage? Lights shining on someone?
Besides the crowd noise, gotta say as cool as they were, their music sounds very dated and raw and almost bad whenever I listen to them.

I listen to 101 on almost a daily basis, there's something about the intros of the songs...like an energy...you don't get on the album...

I have seen a photo of DM in the magazine Q that was from way early in their career, they looked like nerdy kids in second-hand Sunday clothes!
I'll see if I have it at home, probably do, and this is exactly why I don't throw away magazines: someday, at some point, I will need to reference something like this and scan the photo. :D
