All you folks living in the city, my wife and I will be spending just 4 days there this summer, and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good area/hotel to stay in? We're looking around the Wharf at this point. Anything special we need to take in (beyond the obvious)? Neither of us have ever been. Cheers!

Just stayed at the Argonaut at the very end of Fisherman's Wharf and it was great. Right next to the end of the cable cars, a tad touristy but once you get into the city and out of the wharf area it is great. Be sure to check out Hayes Valley and the Mission District.

Hey...I'm going to be in San Francisco in June. Is the Hotel Des Art a nice hotel? The rooms are cool but what's the hotel like?

Priceline owns in SF. Got the Hilton financial district for under $100.
- My great-uncle designed that Hilton. :)ismith

I stayed at the Adagio and really liked it.

last time we went we found a furnished "loft" (really a studio) apartment in a nice building for $140 a night

was reading about the hotel des arts (never been) and it seems some rooms are sort of hostel style where you have a sink basin in your bedroom, but not shower/toilet. those are the cheaper rooms (forget their terminology). then there are the more expensive rooms starting at the Deluxe Queen (DQ) that have a private shower/bath.

i was in SF 3 weeks ago and i was staying in North Beach at the Boheme Hotel. http://www.hotelboheme.com/ its a cute boutique hotel. its very close to China Town and Old Italy. i liked it a lot...
i wasnt with wife or anything but for me it was perfect. Price was great too, like $150 per night.. subways are right there but taxis are everywhere - but taxis are expensive.. i believe it was $5 to start and $2 every few minutes. average cab ride was $12. if not more. food is fantastic, try to eat at Tokyo A-Go-Go its great for sushi and its in a great end of the city, the Mission if i am not mistaken its on the corner of Valencia and 16th. i had fun, met a bunch of NTers who all took great care of me!!!
say hello to them for me!!

I would definitely check out craigslist and see if anyone is subletting their place for 4 days, leave a message in the 'sublet wanted' for when you will be here etc. ive done this a few times myself and can be much much cheaper than a hotel... but maybe you arent a penny pincher like me.

The Clift. It's right by everything, and big huge rooms.
Don't stay at the Fairmont. It's way the fuck at the top of the Hill, and a drag to get back to after dinner.
