Can someone help me with creating a leather texture in illustrator? or point me to some tutorials.
Cheers

I can find plenty for photoshop

Springbok - there's no reason you can't use a bitmap texture in Illustrator - just create your seamless tile in Photoshop, save it off as a PSD, tiff, or whatever, then bring the file into your Illustrator document. Drag the image into your swatches, then apply that swatch to the surface you want to texturise.
You may wish to B&W-ify the texture so you can fiddle with the colouration in Illy itself - perhaps by adding a mesh with some layer effect over it. Or, perhaps, you might not - I still often find exact colour control of bitmaps a bit more intuitive in Photoshop.

detritus - can you blow something up fairly large and expect to not have too much pixelation, if you use a bitmap texture in Illy?

You can - but it'll probably be 'not great'. I think it's 'just as bad' as blowing things up without fixing them in PS.
After you've made the bulk of your Illy document, it's always a good idea to return to PS to finalise the bitmap editing - ie. if you have blown up the bitmap in Illy - go back and use all the proper bitmap editing tools (Sharpen, for instance), then update the texture in Illy.
Don't know what happened there - I thought I'd covered this in my initial response. Silly me and over-editing!

Actually - sorry - it depends on what you mean by 'blow something up fairly large'. If you have a 10 by 10 square with a bitmap texture, and you increase the size to 100 by 100 - the texture size will get smaller, relative to the size of the containing square. So, if you didn't want this, you'd have to expand the bitmap 10 times in Illy, then reapply the texture (or go with some fiddly key-combo and do it in situ, but I don't favour this). Obviously, this'd be just as bad as bluntly expanding the size of the bitmap in any graphics program, which is the point you'd go back and fix it properly in PS.
There. That's just about muddied the issue enough - my work here is done.

- Mostly was trying to calm my paranoia about incorporating bitmaps into Illy. I thank you for your thouroughness. :)harlequino
- No worries - I could've been a lot more concise, was my paranoia!detritus
