The artist has done okay out of church commissions. Just look at the architecture of Hawksmoore. Paid handsomly for creating London's five most important post great fire Christian churches, and modelled them all in accordance with his own 'paganistic' proclivities.

    Paid in Full.

I am a Christian, and I do not endorse "Christian" businesses who only promote themselves within Christian circles. I think it's asinine and only one step removed from the people selling crap in the temple courtyard during Jesus' time in Jerusalem. Jesus proceeded to drive them out of the temple, he was actually really pissed off about it. That tells me something about for-profit Christian-only business ventures.

    Happy?

    • Ya had to throw Jesus in there. You started out so well too.

It's a shame that all churches have gotten typecast into money hungry machines. The churches I've been to have advocated giving; not necessarily to them, but just in general. That could take the form of many things including giving to the church for it's expenses, but also to things like sponsoring children in impoverished nations, giving to homeless shelters, and building homes in other countries. I won't get into how those separate endeavors are conducted because I don't agree with the way in which a lot of it is done. A lot of (sane, modest) churches aren't the money hungry machines that we see on television. I do understand how people can feel that way about it though because all we see on TV are giant mega churches, and hear stories about people getting fooled into thinking that giving=salvation. To put it simply the Bible calls on us to give only if we feel compelled, and that God doesn't want is to give our money if we don't freely wish to part with it. I know this is a little off topic, but I just wanted to clarify that the point of many churches isn't trying to take all of your money.

As far as churches hiring Christian design firms, I can understand it, but I don't think it's necessary. I think your everyday atheist, or non-christian may be somewhat uncomfortable working with a church especially if they didn't believe in any number of things that religion stands for. I think working with someone who is on a similar wavelength is important with certain things like religion and politics where people have strong convictions about what they believe. A lot of Christian agencies probably like the feeling they get designing for their religion because to them they feel it serves God's purposes. The clients like it too because its probably a shorter learning curve, quicker connection, and they feel the designer has their (very personal, and sensitive) interests in mind. Although I must confess some ignorance, I am sure there are plenty of other specialty firms out there. For example if your design firm really specialized in the automotive industry, and was familiar with that industry's graphic vocabulary it would certainly make sense for a company like Toyota to use them. Whether or not that pushes design as a whole is a different matter, and probably explains why so many christian sites look similar (they are done by many of the same people).

Well, I'm tired of typing. You don't have to agree with me, but at least try to understand it from somebody who is a Christian. Some of us are pretty normal people, and not all about money.

    • Oh and just FYI, I would never work at a "Christian" design firm. This is just how some people see it.odinie
    • well said, I agree 100%.gramme
    • you and gramme seem normal, that teleos dude seems like a tyrant.mrdobolina
    • I really have no problem with christians as long as they arent always testifying. that drives me nuts.mrdobolina

quite a few people that attend church make money out of their connectivity through the congregation of goers. stand in the lobby after a service and listen to all the handshake contracts that go down. and listen to all the women talk about their pineapple upside down cakes. no more than any other regular large gathering of people i guess.

    let me clarify.

i work with 23 different agencies producing printed goods, large format, etc....

two of them are christian design agencies. and proclaim to be.

of those 23 agencies, 1.) they have the worst attitude 2.) they speak down to you when ordering 3.) they usually have a timeline of about 12 hours 4.) they both repackaged early opensource php cms's and resell them to church's for about 250 a month, and they don't even update the site. the church does. 5.) they are the only two companies out of the 500+ we serve that have actually said "your customer service leaves something to be desired"

when i was younger i went to church. these kind of experiences really show the true nature of the modern day religion as we know it.

and the work is not good. no telling what those crooks are charging for it.

    Sincerely,

    *Slap

There's nothing wrong with 'targeting' people. It simply means finding people that could benefit from your service, and asking them if they are interested.

If you're blagging them to buy something that they don't need, or ripping them off somewhat, then yeah I guess that's not good. Integrity.

  • gramme0

Send 'em a special slap from gramme. That's a damn shame dude. No way for a Christian to behave.

I for one am one Christian man trying to produce just plain ol' good design, regardless of who the client is.

  • Momentum20

When I do work for Christian Churches or Non Profits they always want to pay. Sometimes I want to do it just for free but I usually get the excuse "I wouldn't want to take your creativity for free... I'm blessed so I'll bless you".

I'm pretty sure there are pissy people in every sect... either being religious or non religions..

Whats that saying "don't throw the baby out with the bath water" haha is that the saying? Oh well BIg deal!

    • True and wise words. I have had the same experience working w/ my church.gramme

"Hello, I am a pot smoker, I can do websites for pot smokers just like you because I knows the biz, call me the next time you're ordering pizza."

"Hello, do you wear shoes? So do I! Call me now and I can design your websites better!"

What industry DOESN'T do this? We're actually having this conversation? I mean fuck all here... really?!?

  • gramme0

The issue at hand is the notion of considering Christianity an "industry".

    • I'm kind of on your side here duderino.somatica
    • christianity itself is not an industry. but there are goods and services that cater specifically to christians.ender79
    • christian books, music, tshirts, etc. these things need to be designed by someone. if that's the niche someone chooses...ender79
    • or feels called to, as long as they aren't ripping clients off, i don't see a problem.ender79
  • onewhoslaps0

repacking an opensource CMS and charging a church a monthly bill to the tune of $250 for the honor of updating there own site which was generated from a free PHP structure ripped off by the jesus agency.

it's just embarasing, the way i see it. and they aren't doing their religion any favors by conducting business in that kind of manner.

if it had been a pack of gypsies doing this i wouldn't have started the thread.

when you put the big banner "christian agency" i expect you not to rippppp off your neighbor. i think that might be a commandment.

    • I've seen tons of people do that, atheists, Christians, Muslims, and Jews alike. (and many more)ismith
    • Point being assholes exist and they can call themselves whatever they want.ismith
    • you both are absolutely correct.ender79
