if you like steak make sure you go to a alley called Via delle belle donne and there is a small restaurant called Osteria delle belle donne and get a 1kg fiorntina. Famous world wide and the best food you will ever eat

Florence has amazing roof gardens. I stayed in the Boscolo hotel which has a cool roof garden but the best thing was the waiter. He was about 45, dressed in a white tux, dancing around to Sinatra and made up random cocktails for you because he thought you looked like you would enjoy them. He was fab. Great night view of Florence too.

be sure to take a moment to observe the Caribinieri standing about with their hands in their pockets, eyeing up tourist women and chatting about the football while a their machine guns rest casually off their shoulders like handbags.
I love Italy, hilarious country.

San Miniato al Monte is a church on the hill above Piazzale Michelangelo. The Benedict monks that live there do Gregorian chants during the late afternoons. It's wonderful. You can then walk down the hill and there is a beautiful set of stairs on the Piazzale you can sit on and watch the sunset over the hills!

This is all great seriously thanks! I cant wait to go now, were going to get tickets for the Fiorentina v Reggina game too at Artemio Franchi so that should be cool.
Would any of you recommend booking at the Uffize as Ive heard its busy at this time of year?
- Uffize is always busy but worth the visit.Kiko
- Hire a tour guide for Uffize, Well worth it. You will learn so much about the work in the collection.jdascher1200

I was there last week. If you think it's going to be sunny and warm think again. It was freezing.
So my advice take a coat.
It was busy when I was there, apparently its the time of year when the Italian kids go on school trips, loads of em everywhere. I think the Italian holidays are soon too. At least thats what I understood from a very long conversation with a waiter with limited english and my limited Italian.
Oh and don't stay at the Meridiana it's a noisy hellhole.

How much would you recommend I take (Euros) for me and my missus for a week anyway? Is it an epensive place? (Ive just come back from Copenhagen so Im sure it will be comparatively cheap!)
- you can get buy on 1500 euro especially if your hotel is serving you breakfast.jdascher1200

Check out Piazza Santo Spirito one night for food and drinks. there were at least 10 great spots to choose from on the square all with tables available outside.

Piazza Santo Spirito is great just to sit on the basilica stairs or by the wall, chill out and pretend you're a foreign art student just like the others :)
BYO pizza and Peroni from the nearby http://www.tripadvisor.ie/ShowUs… (recommended as best pizzeria by locals, confirmed by yours truly).
I regret skipping a major Pollock exhibition when I was there last month, apparently it's still on:

I lived there for a year many years ago. Check out "Vasari's Corridor". It's got very weird hours but it's an awesome collection of self-portraits -- from Pontormo to van gogh.
They say one of the Medici's built it so he didn't have to walk to work with his ugly wife in full view
