i snapped my acl back in 02,
but instead of using a ligament or tendon from my body, i had a cadavors acl inserted.. the recovery was fast

I think there's like three methods, one form the hamstring, the cadaver thing, or from another ligament..pluses and cons for each...
- I was told the hamstring surgery is best, if you want to continue with sports and physical activity.dirtydesign

Well, ACL is really a bitch of an injury.
It will take time to heal (at least 6 months - 1 year to be fully functional)
And.. basically say bye to skiing and other knee intensive sports.- I know. I'm just hoping for the best though...TheBlueOne

@dirtydesign: You do Krav with Rhon?
- dirtydesign0
I take Krav at Krav Maga Inc in Midtown. My membership is on hold, our office moved, so not sure I can make it to class.
It took about a month to walk with a limp and about a year to get it to full potential.- AH..alot of the guys at this seminar I went to used to do Krav with Rhon...interesting conversations...is Tim G. still with Rhon?TheBlueOne

- Doesn't sound familiar. I haven't been in a few months. Actually thinking about joining a school downtown closer to work.dirtydesign

I did enjoy an entire Sunday with my wife waiting on me hand a foot. Was quite pleasant actually. But getting in and out of the shower this morning and moving around the tiny kitchen to make a pot of coffee by my lonesome sucked this morning...

Actually, Krav is what really stengthened my knee. My doctor told me its almost impossible to tear the hamstring transplant...why I chose that surgery

Sorry to hear about the injury blueone...
I basically destroyed my ACL in highschool, got it repaired by using a piece of my patella tendon and it took a full year to recover...
In hindsight I would have chosen to either use a graph from a cadaver or a piece from my own hamstring. My patella tendon to this day is really tender, plus physically your body is so much better at recovering from a muscle injury than a tendon or ligament.
Depending on your timing for the Japan trip, you might be able to hold off on the surgery. You can focus on strengthening your leg muscles because when you do get the surgery it will atrophy. You can still function and even do sports and physical activity with no acl. Granted you run the risk of popping your knee out of place again.
I've personally lost count on how many times it's popped on me... but that's because I need an new surgery. I still surf, skate, snowboard, martial arts... etc...
good luck blue.
