This would be assuming you can access your computer from elsewhere? Most broadband accounts have dynamic ips, and maybe you have a router. I would hope your computer is harder to get to from the outside.
There is some software to make this easier, but, you need to figure out if you need access to everything on your computer, or just some stuff.
Personally, if I'm away for more then a few days, I carry all current/ongoing projects and files with me. But I am transitioning to setting up projects in subversion*(Mac & PC). Some sort of version control is becoming more and more common place, so getting familiar is a plus.

Bulletproof is easy to setup on XP as far as I can remember.

need to run a super lightweight FTP server off my computer to access shit when i need it from elsewhere. on winXP. the easier and minimalist, the better.
