I got fairly good at AS1 considering I'm not a developer...but now with as2 and even as3 coming out, i'm getting left behind...anyone know some good websites to learn the simple as2 and as3 stuff from?
would be nice to see a side by side comparison. For example how would you write this in as2 and as3:?
switchbutton_mc.onRelease = function(){
if(a == undefined){a=1};
if (a === 1){
movie1_mc._visible = true;
movie2_mc._visible = false;
a = 0;
}else{
movie1_mc._visible = false;
movie2_mc._visible = true;
a = 1;
}
}

I could use a nice AS3 website as well. Some pretty cool stuff in AS3.

Man, how did you miss AS2 all that time? Whatever, skip it. Absolutely no sense on getting accustomed to it if you're not going to be on a development team with a project rooted in it.
The best possible way to learn AS3 is simply by thinking of an idea, and forcing yourself to make it. Use Adobe's official AS3 language reference, it covers every single thing imaginable.
For all other purposes, almost every conceivable AS-related question has been asked before, so use Google a shitload. Sometimes you'll forget stupid little things, so I'm always doing quick searches like:
"Flash AS3 xml loader child node syntax", and get a quick reminder immediately.

Your code? Assume "a" is a boolean:
switchButton.addEventListener(Mo... btnHandler);
function btnHandler(event:MouseEvent) {
someMovie.visible = a;
a = !a;}

use google's site: feature to search sites like kirupa, sitepoint and flashkit. there's a wealth of information on those sites and going ton their forum searches is tedious when you can do it all from google. always ask questions in forums - don't just browse and hope you find your answer.

yeah, AS2 was compiled as AS1 when you exported anyway, so it was kind of a dumb iteration. Just jump to AS3.

An AS programmer friend of mine sent me this the other day, kind of a nice overview of AS3 by Colin Moock. Not quite what you're asking for but could be a helpful read.

Just want to say its good to see some useful advice and tips being shared here unlike the increasingly frequent bullying that occurs in response to someone asking a sensible question.
