Israeli Internot

The Israeli Parliament has just passed a law on censoring the Internet (note the title of this post!) and the law proposal was brought on by the religious party Shas.

It is an absolutely outrageous and utterly stupid law because there is software that can filter the Internet for the user and anybody can install it. What Shas and this law are proposing that this be done automatically by the ISP unless requested otherwise by the user.

Moreover, the question still stands: According to which standards and who will decide what is filtered and why? Will porn be filtered only or women in evening dresses too (according to religious laws). What about gay information websites? Arabic websites? What about, well, anything?!

So, what's next? Burning inappropriate books? Jailing people? Well, we, Jews, had the opportunity to learn from the best in that field already (read 1933-1945)...

Another good reason to live in a secular state...

    Ostensibly secular states..

    • (marked in green)detritus
    • So, the U.S. will delete "In God We Trust" from the dollar bill?ivanb
    • 'ostensibly'. And yes, maybe it will one day - the 'God' mentioned was the masonic ideal of a higher order.detritus
    • There you go. A higher order! Same difference my friend...ivanb
    • Not really - I'm utterly agnostic, but respect the inference that a higher order entails. It's more a social thing than religious.detritus
    • Seriously. You regard "higher" as social? What is it then?ivanb
    • If God doesn't exist - why did we create him? To provide an ultimate tier of accountability to king, chancellor or peon.detritus
    • yes, that is true and i agree, but why would anybody need a thing like this in deciding every day things... like censoring the internet or for lack of a better example attacking iraq.ivanb
    • Beats me, fella - that's where the Religion Bit begins to screw things up for everyone!detritus
    • green you say? like the color of LEPRECHAUNS!!! your cover is blown my little friend. vindication is mine

    • Greenland's not even green. This map is FAKE!Jaline
    • why is the UK not green?_niko

I guess that's what happens when you explicitly set out to create a religious state, funded by zealots the world over, the frontiers (both politically and physically) of which are populated by hardcore nutjobs.

  • detritus0

    Well, good luck with this.

Perhaps, if you work for an Israel-based internet marketing company, you could run your own campaign to raise awareness of the issue?

    • no dice... would probably be blocked
      ********
    • or even get circumcised...

    • lol! my website was already blocked in china way back, it will happen here too...ivanb

it isn't just "religious" states. the chinese government censors and controls their people's internet access, too.

    • right!ivanb
    • For sure, but we're talking about Israel here.detritus
    • and, a supposedly advanced first world nation at that. Don't get me wrong - we've got our own problems here in the UK..detritus
    • ..but if real states like Israel go down this path, then it opens the door for other countries too. ie. this is a worldwide issue.detritus

Religious or not, Israel is supposed to be a democracy. At least this is used EVERY time when talking about the conflict here. Like, we are a western style modern democracy as opposed to backwards Muslim regimes around us. Total lie!

    • Exactly.
I hope you meant to encapsulate 'backwards' ironically.. :)

    • yes. sorry. i never thought anything else.ivanb

i get what you're saying. i don't like my government getting too involved in my personal business either.

however, democracy doesn't equal anything goes. there are boundaries to people's actions.

that being said, too many and too tight restrictions on a person defy the basic ideals of democratic government. from what i've read in your original post, people have a choice to turn off the filtering software or not. you didn't mention any sort of punishment for turning the software off (and i couldn't read your link).

the fact that they have a choice is the difference between democracy and the regimes you refer to, where people have no choice but to obey or be punished.

but i do disagree with government officials assuming that they know what people want. it happens here, in the u.s., all the time. it would've been better to require that isp's offer the filter for people who want it instead of making it the default.

if i am incorrect in my understanding of the law, please correct me. i'm just going off of your post.

    ok.

    1. the software will be automatically installed for every new ISP connection, and the user can turn it off by specifically asking for that. also, another law DIDN'T pass today, and the law was supposed to make ISPs tell you that this is the case (as a counter measure to the first law). all in all as a new user you will not know if your internet is filtered or not. assume it is!

    2. turning it on or off isn't the most important question. i am concerned about "on". who decides what's filtered and why? according to what logic? or rules?

    3. i do agree with your point that the government is not going to tell me what i want or don't want. i'll be the judge of that, as long as they don't ask me about what they're doing...

The sad truth is every country in the world does something of this nature to keep some sort of control over it's population. Whether they do it openly or secretively is another story. There are plentyy of UNdemocratic that go on in the USA. For example, the whole "Universal HealthCare" plan of Hillary Clinton seems very undemocratic & scary to me. If she becomes President (thankfully, it doesn't look like it now), she will FORCE everyone to get under the government approved HealthCare plan. And if a person decides he/she doesn't want it, or has absolutely no $ to sign up & pay for it, he will be charged a VERY hefty financial penalty. How is democratic? How is that sane? People living in the States sometimes forget how UNdemocratic things could be even here.

    Move.

  • ivanb0

Don't even make start on the U.S. democracy.

I am reading "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn right now. All Americans should read this.
