In a way - thank fuck. With 3d printers and home CNC, designers can go back to arranging atoms - designing actually useful things for the real world - not just applying our own peculiar gloss to a standardised vocabulary of 2d forms.

if it's dull to you that means you are not where things are happening. Yes. Lots of "design" is not actually design.
Yes. There are lots of "designers" out there that are not worth the software they work on.
Yes. Most stuff you see is nothing short of style.But it is not dead. Just not visible to those who look in the wrong places.
If you are looking at fffound for design you are looking in the wrong place. It's eye candy. Not design.
