Here's a tutorial that deals with a 3D effect in illustrator, not exactly the same, but you might pick something up from it.

otherwise a lot of design is finess - if you have the shape down, just play with gradients and meshes and opacity until you get something you like.

You just need to pratice with the gradient tool and he gradient mesh tool. Lots of practice.
