I was really fortunate in Atlanta to have good recommendations on stylists and here in LA I am left without a clue.
Before I blow a bunch of money and possible ruin my hair, does anyone have any suggestions?

my wife gets her's done at vidal sassoon in beverly hills. about $100 but the guy does a good job. i believe it's at the intersection of santa monica and canon.

the saddest / funniest / saddest again thing just happened. i made an appointment at a place that i learned about while shopping at an aveda store. i drove there just now and walked into a room of black women who all looked at me with really wide eyes and puzzled brows.
now, i'm no racist but my hunch is they don't have a lot of experience with my kind of hair. so i sat there with a form to fill out and decided i couldn't do it and walked out.
i bet they were extremely relieved and will be laughing about it all day.

Rudy's is a good cheap guys cut, not sure about women. They have one on Sunset in SilverLake, and right before I moved, they were opening one on Main in SM. There was a fake Rudys type place in West LA on SM blvd and Sawtelle area that I thought sucked... I forget the name, but stay away.
If I wanted to treat myself to a snooty good expensive cut, I would go to Luxelab on Montana in SM. http://www.luxelab.com/
But... my best haircuts in LA came from this ex-dogtown surfer dude Alan Scott who used to own a artgallery/salon on Pico and 3rd next to Vidiots. He moved down to Huntington 2yrs ago, but still comes up once a month to cut at a place near the Promenade. His number is 714-402-6738. I truly miss his haircuts.

rand, to answer your question:
month 1: loved it, walked around wide-eyed, took in hollywood. busy at work so i didn't have time to freak out.
month 2: freaked out, realized i had no idea where anything was and that i'd left all my friends back in atlanta
month 3-present: realized: a)it's not so bad, b) traffic isn't much worse than atlanta, c) there are a lot of new friends to be made, and d) the weather's damn near perfect most of the time
