do something that you could really apply to the real world. maybe something that can have direct impact with your local community. something that forces interchange between social groups, engages etc etc...
*i just re-read your post...CI? hmmm yeah that's not gonna go anywhere with what i just said... just some thoughts: is CI what you really want to do? You think that will be 'substantial' enough?

think of a theme like - 'what would you like to eat next week'
get loads of illustrators to send you heir awesome illustrations on that theme (explain its a super exciting project)
get GFSmith to sponsor paper and print (explain its a super exciting project)
hold exhibition with all the illustrations you have recieved.
spam qbn with updates and call to entries.minimum work-maximum exposure//

I have an idea. You should find a local non-profit/service based organization that needs brand work done (either re-branding or new branding), and do the work for them (for free of course). It's win win, you get real experience, a real product, and you get to help someone out.
