I was approached by a client about accepting credit card for payment for some work done. I've been doing some research and there are a few companies that offer the service while charging you for a percentage of the amount and for the transaction.
Do you use any of these companies? Any suggestions on how and who to use? or...
Is it worth doing it or should I just tell them to cut a check?

I'd say paypal..
I've always used them..
- How much do they charge?OSFA
- 2 or 3 %.. I would add a 'service charge' if they used paypal...nicnichols

If this is just a one off or irregular thing, I'd go cheque or bank transfer, unless they insist upon paying by credit card, in which case you should pass on the CC percentage.

It's great. You get paid faster.

I would tell them to cut a check instead. I dont see how you can add the extra fee at the end of the payment, right now. next time, you could.

I guess I'm asking thinking of future clients. I guess paypal would be a good option since there is no equipment to rent or montlhy fees... but can i set it up if I don't have an e-store? or shopping carts? Would paypal set up and provide a link so that I forward it to my clients?

well, I think your client(s) who choose to pay via paypal has to get there own paypal account. but, I have seen like on rapidshare.com. you can pay via paypal buy sign in or not. so there might be a way other ways.

I use http://www.practicepaysolutions.…
It's your own gateway that allows to process visa and master. American Express is an additional option. There's a minimum of like $10 per month if you don't use the system. If you use it, there's a percentage they take out from every transaction (pretty small). You also set up a name that appears on your clients bank statements, so it looks official :)If this is just a one-time thing for you, maybe use paypal or those companies that don't require you to provide your ssn or tax id.
I like accepting cards because it's faster and you don't have to go to the bank to deposit checks. Plus you can just keep the card on file and after sending the invoice just run it and be done (of course with proper agreements). Makes billing easier.

Checks.. When I get one I feel like saying "so you mister want me to take my precious time to go to the bank, waste half an hour and wait four days for this crap to clear while the banks make gazillions off my money?" Jeebus... cash or transfer ffs!
it really boggles my mind why checks are still around these days. I come from a country still considered 2nd world by many and wire transfers between banks take no longer than half a day there.
- you know you can deposit the check at the atm machine also. how hard is that. take a walk, get some air. sweeeet.akrokdesign
- true doh, check can bounce. which sucks. :-(akrokdesign

I use paypal, they charge some percentage, I don't get huge payments so it doesn't matter too much for me.
