The "saucernaut" thread made me think of this-
Anyone know the direction in which to look regarding getting prototype toys made based on illustrated characters (vinyl or otherwise). I know nothing about this field. Though perhaps there was a DIY or small scale version of it similar to getting one;s own DVDs and printed literature made.
(e-pill, you're involved in this, aren't you?)
Thanks, folks.

YES!! i work for a company that has factories in china that accomplish all this for me. i create the concepts and the 3D specs for each design.
i suggest you sculpt out your design or find a sculptor who can accomplish this for you and get the mold over to a vinyl factory.
you can get in touch with these factories in any of the Toy shows thru-out the world.. they will be there with many other manufacturers and vendors.
i suggest you purchase many books on vinyl and soft vinyl designing and production and just the history of the toys.
since you are here in NYC goto Kinokuniya Bookstore [goto 2nd floor in the back, there is a section on Toy design and Vinyl History just past the Photography section.]
also a MUST - ZAKKA CORP [located in DUMBO BK] 1 block off the water http://www.zakkacorp.com/ get as much references from there as possible.
also a good venue for you to check out would be DC Direct [since they have office here in nYC] also many other soft vinyl and other toys vendors are here in nyc for you.
also contact me direct for any questions.
best of luck!!

Out of personal interest - are there any environmentally friendly alternatives to that evil, insidious material, vinyl? 'specially anything that could be made DIY?

A million thanks, eddie!
Very cool, I will keep you on ze roledex. It's still in the ultra embryonic stage, but it's tied into an animated series we're going to start pitching soon. Trailer and site will will be done shortly, and we'll be making contacts with a pile of people at the NY Comicon (you going? we should have a beer!).
The show is all vampires and zombies and magic and flying around in spaceships, so thinking ahead about toys seems natural.I'll look into everything you listed. Thanks again! :)
