I need to be able to quickly turn CMYK line art and stuff into their grey scale equivalents in InDesign.
Am I missing something, or is there no grey scale switcheroo in InDesign? I see CMYK, Lab and RGB on the Colour palette, but no grey.

are you talking about a image imported into ID? You will have to do the conversion in PS, relink.

I'm talking about drawing a box or a line in ID in CMYK, then being able to switch it to its grey scale value. Same as you'd do in AI.

yeah i remember coming up against (....mmmm) this before.
I think i had to bring a pdf of the final piece into illustrator to sort it out.its a right kunt!

does it need to remain an ID file? you can export a pdf and do tools > print production > convert colors in acrobat

If you want to change the entire document, you can adjust it in the PDF Format for Post Script right?

Just use black and leave the CMY at zero. Grayscale.

or delete the color in the swatch and replace it with watever black value swatch you just created

Hmmm... Just don't use colours. Black only.

Is there a reason why you can’t copy and paste into Illustrator and do it there?
