  I've worked on a number of micro sites and they have always been to target a very specific audience for a short amount of time. If you aren't in the demographic you aren't going to see it.

  I also think the overall string of microsites a company does builds a brand emotion... maybe people don't buy from the specific microsites but they know what the company stands for...

  I bought a paid of sneakers from the nike id studio... but not online... but the microsite influenced me to get me in the store...

  1. minimalist no effort design snob sites = bad
  2. high end, slick, expensive, hard to find micro sites = bad

  you see sites like that all the time winning cannes lions and other awards, but you're right the general public might not see them, but then again the general public doesn't see avant-garde or art films either but it doesnt prevent people from making them or studios from financing them.
