It's not that the photography is so bad. It's that those subjects are so ugly, and stupid looking, and such terrible dressers. These photos do a reasonable job of making them look mainstream.
Just think what sort of lunatics they'd look like if Avedon or Arbus had photographed them! Or William Eggleston.
