Antivirus?

I have grown terribly weary of AVG Free Antivirus, it makes my machine chug so unbelievably bad. I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation on a better antivirus? Is Claimwin worth a try? My main concern is finding one that doesnt make my machine slow to a crawl.
Another question would be is Antivirus even really necessary? I use a firewall, and have never had my antivirus find anything on my machine. I dont download suspicious files and run a pretty tight ship with my computer. Does anyone out there run sans-antivirus and live to tell about it?
Thanks all.

I have MacAfee on my computer but I don't have it monitoring. On one hand it's like having a condom in your pocket and not putting it on but I run a scan every now and then and refrain from doing anything sketchy and I have never had a problem.

Schedule your scans to happen when you aren't using it. Just it running isn't giving you problems is it?

Yeah, I am getting problems from it just running. It is a big hog. It runs every time I start my machine up, and it drives me absolutely batty. Most days I just quit the scan so I can use my computer. Is there a better option? One that works?

I don't have AV on my home PC and I've never had an issue, but I also never log in as an admin.

From what I hear, MacAfee and Norton arent as good as some other options, and they cost money. I know there are free antivirus scanners out there.

I've been delaying my norton buy option because I'm still not sure how it works. I used to have a free av ap and my PC was broken one day. After buying another computer with pre-installed Norton av, I actually get these pre-emptive messages from the norton av telling me of this and that attacks with trespasser's IP and all. I feel more confident with it, since I don't think Norton wouldn't need to fake attacks to sell you their shit. Or am I wrong?
