I keep most of my images on dvd / external disk via time machine. One for back up and two to keep free space on my mac. iphoto needs all the images on the mac, right? So it can't have some images on external and some on mac?

you most certainly can use an external drive.

Also check out iphoto library manager -> http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/ip…
It's lets you split your iphoto library. So you might want more recent photos on you MAC.... and photos from the last 10 years on an external drive. Shaweet.

so if I have more than one library, say I move some images from my mac to the external drive, will the libraries update accordingly? Is there a 'refresh' option or something?
