I know AS3 is really geared for developers and programmers. Any designers make the switch from actionscript 2 to 3 with ease? I'm a designer used to gotoAndPlay's and simple IF ELSE statements and am wondering if its a huge change to AS3 or if its just a matter of getting used to new syntax...
should i even start getting familiar with 3 or is AS2 going to be around for a while...

Is it necessary to know 2 and 3? I imagine it may be just in case you have to work with older files for whatever reason.

Probably you need to start learning some OOP coz the level of abstraction in AS3 gonna hurt your feelings.
I found myself playing a little bit with AS3 and it's really simple to use, it's familiar to AS2 but the semantic it's quite different.
My advice is get the C. Mook book, Essential ActionScript 3.0.

I've been toying with it. Overall I prefer AS2 to AS3, some of the syntax feels like a total regression but that's how it is.

agreed, some of what i've been messing with seems like a total downgrade.. hard to explain

it may sound strange, but learning python made every other language much easier to grasp

I consider myself a designer, and I love AS 3, even more than AS 2

Yeh, I can code in as2 without thinking, so learning things like the display tree, and that there is no more sendAndLoad, etc was a bit daunting, but it doesnt take too long, and you really get the feel that you're programming a 'proper' language now, especially as you'll probably not use the script editor in the flash ide.
Jump in, the waters cold at first, but you'll soon warm up.

If you are doing just basic timeline-based AS then you can probably stick with just AS2 as it is still supported with the latest Flash players and will probably be around for a while. AS3 would be better for OOP-based applications as it's more efficient than AS2.

also... there are some good posts about the AS2 to AS3 migration that may help, such as this cheat sheet that compares the various class methods and changes between the two versions:

Why the fuck we have to know any of this programming language is beyond me. We should be concentrating on the creative part, and not the bloody programming part.

This is a great article. Any designer who did simple button states and timeline gotoAndPlays should read this. Should help get over any fears you may have about migrating to AS 3.0.
