ok, so i received an iphone and i am wondering if i should actually go through with the process of activating it and signing up with at&t. i have heard some horror stories about overcharging, bad cust. service, and slow download speeds. can anyone attest to this?

Wow, I was about to ask the exact same question. I'm thinking of buying one in about two weeks. I also wondered how much the activation fee is?

as opposed to not activating it with at&t and just looking at it funny?

well i can "jailbreak", but i have seen 1000's of complaints about overcharged bills and charging for data even though it includes unlimited data.

My friend owns one, he went to China and his bill was over 1k
ahahaha fuck that.(I'm assuming his bill was outrages because of international charges)
- i guess that isn't free roaming huh? haha.
studderine - 1k? hahavisualplane_

no problems here, have the iphone and been with att/cingular for like 5yrs. I already had a plan so they just added $20 bucks to my plan for the iphone. Bills have always been consistent as well.
- did you have to pay an activation fee? i've been a cingular/at&t user for a while and i'm just waiting a few more weeks to get one.
alkanenine - I don't think so... but I can't be suredesignisfine

I've owned one for a while now. No crazy charges, no customer service complaints, nothing like that. The huge bills come from when people travel internationally without an international plan; bad planning on their part, would have happened with any phone. As for AT&T, I love my iPhone but their service and coverage needs some work.
- no iphone, but ive had att for a while now. no problems, and as far as service, depends where you are. I have great service, better than verizon at times.inhaler97

You can fairly easily crack it to use with any at&t card/plan, but you can only unlock the sim if the phone has a pre 4.6 bootloader installed. Bootloader is the device's deep firmware, something bios-like. They began shipping the 4.6 around 42th week of production in the US and all EU phones have it.
There are modifications you can apply to the simcard if you have the new version though, google turbosim, magicsim.
Mine is a week 28 US model and I had no problem at all activating, jailbreaking and unlocking the thing (yes there are these 3 steps of cracking the device).

My wife and I bought one each, activated them and set up our plans through iTunes (as new customers). We chose a Family Plan but the pricing structure was totally different to that on the website. We also had to choose two separate SMS add-ons. Our first bill came in at $340 and I worked it out monthly to be $190-200. Can anyone confirm that's about right or does it seem a little high?
- I just shat myself as we went from $70 T-Mobile + $20 Pay & Go to more than double.5timuli

That is what I pay for me and wifes phone. We used to pay Sprint $160 for less minutes, no rollOver. The rollOver stuff is great! I dont worry about me or her going over minutes, almost like having a unlimited plan.

pay the 75$ a month and just use at&t its easier
