i wouldn't really compare to bridge.. ? lightroom maybe but they're still completely different.
iphoto 08 is a big improvement from previous versions. great everyday family-photo-album app... but i wouldn't really use for anything else.

one thing that does my head in about the iphoto i have now is the menu system. I wish you could just switch to a local folder view. I hear the new one has a better system though. Also, with bridge you can drag into photoshop / dreamweaver etc. Can this be done with iphoto? Sooo many questions!

You can drag from iphoto to pshop. You can also setup pshop as an external editor for your photos, so it keeps the orig in tact.

I've never tried lightroom. I think it costs a bit though and I'm too tight! ilife's only £30. was thinking of giving .mac a go too perhaps
