Kinda big news...
http://www.computerworld.com/act…So when should we not need to use javascript to embed flash? As people update their browsers, less and less people will ever see the "click to activate".
Why is there no big huff huff about this news, it sure stirred up a fuss when the Eolas case started.

but the js embed method is the safest for other reason- player detection, alternate content display, plus who knows when everyone will be updated- perhaps close to never. i'm still testing for IE5, how old is that? not going away anytime soon.

I'd like to punch that eolas guy in his fucking jaw.

as stated in the article:
"...Once Internet Explorer is updated, all pages that currently require 'click to activate' will no longer require the control to be activated. They'll just work."
fancy that, your webpage will "just work"... what other realizations will come out of Redmond?
- Maybe to drop IE and make it disappear in a puff of logic?rabattski

funny that i was just thinking about how much that crap sucks

I really like using swfobject anyway. It has tons of add on's that make flash dev easier. pushing variables into flash, javascript gateway, swfaddress, etc...

swfobject also offers a reasonable solution for Flash SEO. The old embed technique is already dated - why bother.

right and once you get the hang of it it isnt bad.

what so 'big news' about this, exactly?
- the swfobject workaround is no longer necessary?mrdobolina
- so whats' the big fuss? isn't it a good thing?menos
- Yes it is good ;)Mick

There are plenty of instances where the object/embed code is used - facebook, myspace, embedding youtube videos, etc. I just thought it was kinda interesting. Don't you remember the big fuss when it all started, and it seems nobody really cares any more ;)

I never liked swfobject, it seemed like too much code for a simple task. I wrote my own JS embed functions which didn't cover all possible situations, but were perfect for what I needed.

^^I like anything that works great and doesn't require I write it. :)
Hey Mick! How's things? :)
I think 'nobody really cares anymore' cuz we all were forced to accept another step. I think I'll keep using swfObject because of the simple fact 'everyone' will not upgrade... even a year from now we'll still be hearing about the 'one-click' from clients who've yet to upgrade.

the SEO capabilities are a still valid argument to use swfobject, and the fact that many won't DL the fix for some time.

yeah i'm sticking with swfobject... it has actually made the job a lot easier since it was made in light of the original eolas decisions... loads of great ways of getting in search results because of it
