So I have been diligently organizing my music on my computer over the past week: moving all my backed-up music from an old Creative mp3 player, and various DVD backups, all to a single hard drive to let itunes do a full import of all my music (never used itunes to organize songs before).

I JUST finished moving the last songs off the old one, and was deleting all the current songs off itunes to do the new import, and I accidently selected the "Remove from itunes music folder" not realizing this would erase files from where I stored them.

Realized what I did, and tried to restore files from the recycle bin. It did, but they just disappeared! Totally did not go back into their original folders. Just gone.

I was freaking out. Found some software on line that would restore the recycle bin or deleted files. Paid $40 for it.

AND IT DID NOT DO A FUCKING THING!

It showed me all the files that were deleted and some recently viewed folders, but all the song names did not include the corresponding song. A damn Bloc Party song was 50 Cent!

Is there any way to cleanly restore this stuff?
Luckily, all that was lost is on my ipod, so I've copied those folders in (ipod control/music) and let itunes import it, and then I'm dragging and dropping them into actual folders outside itunes.

This sucks. I was almost done and now this mess.

you said you moved the songs before you deleted it. that means only that in itunes the link if the song is wrong. you just need to browse to the right location.

    Here's what I did:

    1) Selected all songs in itunes.
    2) Deleted them from itunes.
    3) Then it gives another message to "deleted permanently from music folder?" (I thought this was the actual itunes folder, which I don't even store music in. I keep them on a seperate drive)
    4) I realized what I did and went to the desktop recycle bin and sure enough there were hundreds of mp3 files in there.
    5) I hit "Restore All" and it did something, but none of the files were back in their original folders in Explorer. They were just gone.

Now, using that recovery software, it showed me all the files and I recognized stuff, but the songs are all fucked and I don't even know where it puts them.

    try this:

    1. open a windows explorer window and choose Tools>Folder Options (I think, I'm on a mac here so I can't confirm the top level item)
    2. Click View
    3. Set the setting so you can see hidden files and folders
    4. Click OK
    5. Click on Start>Search or whatever it is to do a local file search
    6. Search all drives for *.mp3 (or whatever file xt you use)
    7. Pray/drink as the spirit leads you and hope for the best.

And on top of all this, the only thing I have in the house for dinner is cold peanut butter and a bag of almonds. But it's kind of a tasty combo though.

dear god, what a disaster. I used to struggle with iTunes and it's "dominant-controlling" IU features and preferences, but I've finally turned it into the servant that it should be.

    good luck.

    • Even on a Mac it sucks as a Master. Compliant as a servant, though. Whatever you do...MrOneHundred

this is seriously just so stupid. And now, since I'm copying tracks out of itunes back into Windows folders, all the song names are like MDKE.mp3. I copied them directly out of the ipod control file folders.

    Horrible.

I guess this serves me right though since I plan to get a macbook pro in January. At that point if I am only using itunes to organize music, I guess it shouldn't matter what the actual file names are, since I can then a) fully organize it all with itunes, and b) if I want to burn cds I can do that through itunes as well.

    Here's to synergy!
