Hello folks, Ive been a web designer since 1997 but for past 3 years have moved out of the area into Packaging Design... getting back into Web Design now... what are the skillsets now for positions in companies as Web Designer... are we still looking at the Usual Image manipulation packages such as Photshop, Freehand, etc and CSS and PHP or whats the new buzz....

Are clients want CMS sites more now than they were 3 years ago...
- Yes. as in, those that were not constructing dynamic sites (like they should have been) then, are finally catching upmadirish

Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, InDesign, Flash, Flex for programmers, Adobe should have a web bundle on their site that has all the tools you need!

Do clients expect GRAPHIC designers to be PROGRAMMERS AUTHORS also.... php... css... html... xhtml... asp... etc

clients expect it because they don't understand the whole process. set them straight from the beginning. also, get some programmer friends quickly; it'll do nothing but drive business for both of you.

Every job I see on monster.com and other wite looking for Graphic Designers for website design also request a host of skills like PHP, CSS, Web.2.0, ASP, CMS, ..... whats happening in the market place... are graphic designers suddenly slave to the wage and jake of all trades... where has the respect for graphic designer gone...

It seems VALUE for money is far more important in the majority than ADDED VALUE to the product from effective Graphic Design... or maybe im in the wrong city

I think some places want the designer to handle all the display logic in addition to producing the look & feel.

I do both ... neither particularly well of course, but it's kept me gainfully employed the past 6 years.
