what do you get for (your brother) a college professor for the holidays. needless to say, he is not much for design or anything heavy tech.

Given that he's a 'doctor of philosophy', I think it's a little unfair to state "needless to say, he is not much for design" - maybe that applies to him personally, but most people I know who are professionally scientific have more than a little love for art and design.
Anyway, just imho. Knowing what flavour of PhD might help us a little.
