The dynamic text is the mask? I'm pretty sure that's not possible.

haven't thought properly about this, but would you be able to duplicate that which is to be masked and set it in some kind of blending mode above the text which would allow it to show only on whichever text lay below it?

Dynamic text can be a mask. but... you mask the white block or the colored backgound?

blaw - dynamic text can be masked when the font is embedded.
alcinoo - i'm masking the white block at the moment.

alcinoo - i'm masking the white block at the moment. because the white block is going to move around on the background image ...

kelpie has it - duplicate the background to a layer on top of the white box, and mask that new layer with the text (be sure to embedd your font). Then, whenever you move the white box, move the mask as well.

i'm afraid that i have to duplicate the background, yes.
in my design i have about 20 white boxes with the see through text - i hope it's not going to be too processor intensive!

solved!
needs a lot of "duplicate backgroundlayer" but it works now.

put your dynamic text inside a MC and set 'mc.casheAsBitmap = true' for both, your mask and your masked clip, then apply .setMask... this way you won't only be able to solve this problem, but also you'll be able to use a gradient mask.
