Lots of people actually commented about it in various threads at Newstoday when we knew a new design was being worked on, and I remember lots of people wanting it to be more like it is now (with larger area to post and more features).

What if the background changed colors? That would liven things up. Like for one hour #fffffe; the next hour #fffffd, etc.; right through the whole hexadecimal deal.
After a while, this place would have a bit of proper color, and not come off so pasty and sickly.
