    Williamsburg, Brooklyn

    Opening Reception
    Thursday, April 29

    Overview

The Free Library is a group show that will bring together work by an
international group of graphic designers and artists whose work engages the world of books, language, writing, bastard modernisms, utopian energies,
film, science, literary theory, visionary architecture, and the realm of ideas.

Over the course of three weeks the show will transform the space of
Brooklyn's Riviera Gallery into a functional reading room outfitted with prints and posters, installation work, a large pinboard area, beanbags, a reading table, and books and other publictions available for perusal. The entire space will be designed to encourage visitors to the gallery to spend time reading, hanging out, and interacting with one another. A "circulation desk" located in the back of the gallery will make a limited number of posters and publications available for purchase.

Inspiration for the exhibition design draws on Jean-Luc Godard's prophetic 1967 film La Chinoise, which follows a group of young French radicals who transform a Paris flat into an ad hoc revolutionary think tank over the course of a summer, as well as the modular architectural spaces of Mayers + Schiff's 1973 Acorn School in New York. Each of the participants will also include a selection of books of their choosing in the library.

    Participants

Most of the artists and designers participating in the show have created self-published personal work in the form of writing, t-shirt graphics, books, silkscreens, 'zines, stickers, and other forms that offer a more accessible or "free" platform for their ideas. In addition, many of the participants are associated with or have contributed to independent design
    publications.

See Riviera Gallery for the list of participants and further details.
