20 August 2003 (Singapore): Singaporean creative collective, Phunk Studio has been invited by The Reed Space to launch their inaugural exhibition in New York City.
The title of the exhibition is called Control Chaos. It is a place influenced by the pugilistic world of 80's Hong Kong TV serial. Using :phunk's own visual vocabulary, the collective renders a dysfunctional/apocalyptic take on the classic tales of good versus evil set in the backdrop of heaven, earth and hell.
Phunk has injected their distinctive style of illustration to create a giant mural that will cover the whole exhibition wall area. The mural is made up of 12 pieces of custom-designed canvases made from corrugated carton boxes. The limited edition artworks are individually silkscreen printed.
Located on the lower east side, The Reed Space is a retail space/art gallery started by the people behind graphic design and clothing label, Staple design. The store is named after the name of the head designer¹s high scholl teacher, Michael Reed.
The Reed Space serves as a community center to inspire and make aware. Both aspiring artists and those unfamiliar with the art and design world will be able to see how and why items are created. It will be a space to teach appreciate and divulge the passion for the artist's trade. The Reed Space will serve as a sharing ground for all designers to contemplate the possibilities of their profession.
The space has showcased exhibitions by International artists such as Faile, Andrew Sutherland and Tenmyouya Hisashi.
