Hmm. You're a good enough designer - are you a good enough photographer? Strikes me that you'd need to be a VERY good and dedicated photographer to get any meaningful satisfaction from it as a job.
Personally, I'd aim for neither, but develop 'some kind of' business which feeds off your expertise in the two fields.
Designer are wankers.

I like what menos says - that's the route I'm trying to go down - do a little of all the things that interest me - muddle through, and as I said, try and come up with some business that doesn't revolve around me solely working on other peoples ideas, for their bottom line.
I dream of an Atkinson-like workshop, with some tech, some machinery and some space to doodle, print and cut.
Somewhere I can produce.
Somewhere I can realise some of my patently brilliant inventions and become a wizened, slightly nutty inventor - perhaps in a windmill in the country - and I could make a car..a flying car, that could take me off to wondrous places...
...well, one can dream.
