i typically use a strobe pack on either side of the subject for rim lighting, and a higher middle light for modeling. sometimes a light positioned behind the model on the floor, pointing upward to rimlight the top of the head/hair to pop it out more.
then i'll fade the middle modeling light down if i want a dramatic silhouette effect or something.
it's a good place to start from, pretty simple for a noob like me to get decent results
