hello. many thanks for reading this far.
Does anyone else remember when you went to the cinema in your youth and between/before trailers and shit, there would be an oil based projection of some sort playing? similar to a kaleidoscope type of effect, without the mirroring?
I would be eternally grateful to anyone who could point me toward info and/or pics about these things, particularly the mechanics of them...
I've tried a few google searches and shall continue, but any direct help from here would result in an abundance of joy and possibly even a joyful dance.
cheers
Si.

or even if anyone remembers them, just to prove I am not insane (in this particular context)...

is it similar to the effects used in the Punch Drunk Love titling?

How old ARE you dude
just kidding...I'm 34, but never seen what you're talking about though
- kelpie0
not sure snuggs, not seen it...
to be fair marychain, they were pretty provincial cinemas I was in as a bairn. I'm 4 years younger than you ;P
they used to project this kind of thing behind the Floyd in the 60s, very hippy...

really I'm just wondering if there was some kind of circular slide holder that held the plates of glass with the oil between (I'm guessing at method here). I'm thinking of using elements of this stuff for an ID.
which no one will get, obviously ;)

cheers snuggs, that looks more light based though I think, its more obviously hippy dippy oil in water type stuff...

this kind of thing.
I'm just being annoying here now aren't I?

do you mean like these?
http://www.find-me-a-gift.co.uk/…mathmos make that projector for those oily 70s effects
- kelpie0
aye, that's precisely the thing, I was wondering if there would be photos of older versions of the same thing, something with a bit more interesting a shape (to the actual slides). Old french photographic culture springs to mind for some reason. probably because I am a stupid.

i've seen it used in a cinema retaled id before kelpie... although more light based. can't think what the fuck for though...

Haha..I remember those from old "Hawaii 5-0" episodes whenever McGarret would go to bust some Hippie drug den..all the hippies lounging around behind beaded curtains staring at these gel projections on the wall and McGarret calling them all "Mister..." and them calling him "Man..."

You might want to check those video samples out. These are samples of Digieffects Aurorix plugins samples for After Effects :

haha, the blueone is bang on there...
I might just rewrite history and make up my own antiquated slide holder thing. its clear no fucker in the 21st century has a clue about them ;P

ahhh, I see.. like a lava lamp kinda thing...
- kelpie0
sort of, yeah, if you squeezed one between two plates of glass and spun it...
